How to 'STOP' Damp Rot

How To Stop Damp Rot!

Problem - An external corner wall of the house is getting damp and the plaster inside the house is starting to degrade and fall off.

Solution - Build a stud wall which is insulated with Extratherm insulation boards.

Below is a photo of the cold external wall. The wall always feels cold and damp and the wall paper is peeling off and the plaster has become loose and brittle. The external wall is on the corner of the house and has no cavity for putting foam injected insulation in to. So here's how to stop damp from coming through to the itegral part of the house. Please see photos and descriptions below.

In this photo, I have built a frame which is set away from the old wall by just 1 inch. This creates a void which ensures the damp from the old wall cannot touch or infect the new wall. The first step is to build a stud wall frame to accommodate extratherm insulation boards.

The insulation boards will eliminate any damp coming through from the wall behind and also help to keep the room warmer. Next, I apply plasterboard to cover the new wall in readiness for plastering.

In this photo, I have plastered the newly insulated wall and now it just needs painting. The damp will never appear again and the room has only reduced in size by a mere 4 inches on one wall. The typical cost of this project is relatively cheap and most certainly worth the money spent in the long run!
